Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 38 years old, and my periods are delayed by 10 days for the first time ever. I have always been like clockwork. I have already taken two pregnancy tests, and both were negative.
Please advise.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern regarding the delay in your periods.
Based on the information provided, the most likely provisional diagnosis is delayed menstruation due to a hormonal imbalance or an anovulatory cycle. At 38 years of age, hormonal fluctuations related to early perimenopause can begin to occur, and even previously regular cycles may occasionally become delayed. Since you have already taken two pregnancy tests and both were negative, pregnancy is very unlikely.
Common causes in your situation may include hormonal imbalance, stress or anxiety, delayed ovulation during this cycle, or early perimenopausal changes.
At present, there do not appear to be any immediate danger signs from your description. I would advise you to wait another five to seven days and repeat the urine pregnancy test if your period still does not start.
If your period does not occur within the next two weeks, you should consult a gynecologist for further evaluation. Basic investigations may include thyroid function tests, prolactin levels, and possibly a pelvic ultrasound if the delay persists.
At this stage, no urgent scans or emergency evaluation are needed. A one-time delay in menstruation, even in women with previously clockwork cycles, is quite common and is usually not a cause for serious concern.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
