Are dementia and Alzheimer's disease linked?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

A 73-year-old elderly woman in our church group has been diagnosed with dementia. She has lost the ability to recognize anyone anymore. We have a facility for Alzheimer's patients, but we are not sure if she should go there or if she will be fine on her own. We 'are all worried about her well-being. Now, I have two concerns regarding this, and I need your help.

  1. Is Alzheimer's disease the same as dementia?

  2. Could you help us determine if she needs special care and whether the Alzeihmer facility we have would be the right place for her?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am so sorry for that elderly woman. You can find the answers to your questions below.

  1. Dementia is a medical term that describes a degenerative, progressive decline in cognitive abilities. Since multiple diseases can cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease is the most common condition that causes this condition.

  2. In response to your second question, my answer is yes. You can take her to an Alzheimer’s facility in your area. A facility appropriate for Alzheimer's patients can also admit dementia patients. However, I suggest that she consult with her physician before taking any action about this issue. Consult her specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take the appropriate action.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
