What are the precautions to be taken for dengue fever?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am planning to travel out of the country, but I saw a warning in the travel section about dengue fever in certain areas. This got me worried about mosquito-borne diseases in that region. Is it wise to travel there during a disease outbreak nearby? Should I take any special precautions while traveling there?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Dengue fever is typically not a concern. The mosquitoes that transmit dengue virus, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. However, there have been rare cases of dengue fever reported among travelers returning from regions where the disease is endemic.

If you are planning to travel to areas where dengue fever is prevalent, it is essential to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites. This includes using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and staying in accommodations with screened windows and doors.

If you have concerns about dengue fever or any other travel-related health risks, consider consulting a healthcare provider or a travel medicine specialist for personalized advice and recommendations based on your itinerary and medical history.

If you are traveling to regions where dengue fever is prevalent, it is important to take precautions to reduce your risk of mosquito bites and potential infection. Here are some key precautions:

1. Use Insect Repellent: Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to exposed skin and clothing. Reapply as directed on the product label.

2. Wear Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

3. Use Mosquito Nets: If sleeping in accommodations without screened windows or doors, use mosquito nets to prevent mosquito bites while sleeping.

4. Stay in Accommodations with Screens: Choose accommodations with screened windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.

5. Eliminate Mosquito Breeding Sites: Remove standing water around your living areas, such as in flowerpots, buckets, and other containers, to reduce mosquito breeding sites.

6. Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Activity: Mosquitoes that transmit dengue are most active during early morning and late afternoon to early evening, so take extra precautions during these times.

7. Stay Informed: Stay informed about dengue outbreaks and take necessary precautions based on local health advisories.

8. Seek Medical Attention if Symptoms Develop: If you develop symptoms of dengue fever, such as high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, or bleeding gums, seek medical attention promptly.

Taking these precautions can help reduce your risk of contracting dengue fever while traveling to regions where the virus is prevalent.

Hope it helps.

Thank you.
