What are the specific symptoms of dengue?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am planning a trip to Brazil next month, and I have heard about the risk of dengue fever there. Can you provide some information on protecting myself from mosquito bites and preventing dengue? I am particularly concerned about the areas where the virus is more prevalent. Additionally, are there any specific symptoms I should watch out for during my trip, and what should I do if I suspect I have been infected with the dengue virus?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I suggest using mosquito repellent cream, which is available in the market. Dengue can be spread only by a mosquito (Aedes aegypti). However, someone infected and suffering from dengue fever can infect other mosquitoes. Humans carry the infection from one country to another or from one area to another when the virus circulates and reproduces in the blood system. Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The Aedes aegypti mosquito is not the leading cause of the disease. It is the vector that transmits the virus. The infection causes flu-like symptoms and develops into severe dengue. There is no specific treatment for dengue, but access to proper medical care reduces mortality rates. The best way to prevent dengue is to avoid mosquito bites. Symptoms in dengue may be flu-like symptoms, and infection is suspected with high fever (above 40°C) and at least two of the following symptoms:

  1. Severe headache.
  2. Pain behind the eyes.
  3. Muscle and joint pain.
  4. Nausea.
  5. Vomiting.
  6. Rash.

Symptoms usually last for two to seven days. If you have any of the symptoms after coming from a region infected with the disease, symptoms including:

  1. Severe abdominal pain.
  2. Persistent vomiting.
  3. Gums and nose bleeding.
  4. Blood in your urine, stools, or vomit.
  5. Bleeding under the skin, which might look like bruising.
  6. Difficult or rapid breathing.
  7. Cold or pale skin.
  8. Fatigue.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
