Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am in the second trimester of my pregnancy. I have dental pain on my right side and when my dentist examined me, he said that I require a root canal of a premolar and extraction of a wisdom tooth (no x-ray was taken). I got my root canal treatment done under antibiotic coverage.
However, after four days of the completion, I still have pain in my jaw. I am unable to localize the pain. However, there is no hot or cold sensitivity in my mouth. What should I do? Should I go and get my wisdom tooth extracted? My gynecologist says to avoid extractions in pregnancy as far as possible. I am taking Progesterone, Thyroxine, multivitamins, and iron tablets. I had taken Amoxicillin 500 mg bd for 5 days and Paracetamol 500 mg for the pain.
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Yes, it is true that extractions should be avoided in pregnancy and should be done only if it becomes an emergency due to severe pain. Also, the second trimester is safest for dental procedures.
So my suggestion is to consult your dentist and get evaluated and if the pain is due to a wisdom tooth. He can suggest another course of antibiotics and Acetaminophen (painkiller) to reduce infection and pain. Also doing warm saline gargles and cleaning the area around the wisdom tooth can help in relieving pain.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
