Can a tooth become dead even after it responds to a cold test?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a childcare worker. Today, a child jumped and hit my mouth with his head. My mouth went numb and I cut my lip. My front tooth feels like it is loose but it is not wobbling. When I searched about this on the internet, I came to know that the tooth may be dying, but I tested it with ice and I could feel it. What do you think this is? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Well, as you have just got injured, you cannot immediately test for the vitality of the tooth. If the tooth is not loose or painful, then there is a possibility that the tooth has got minor trauma and that the tooth is not dead. But if the tooth does not get better or if you experience some other symptoms then you need to do an X-ray of the tooth. It will help rule out the exact condition of the tooth and help decide how to proceed with the treatment so that you do not lose your tooth. So, wait for another three to four days and if there is some complication, then you should see a dentist.

Hope you get well soon.

Thank you for consulting me.
