At 39, can my depression affect my physical health?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello, Doctor,

I’m 39 and have been dealing with depression for years, but lately I feel like it’s affecting every part of my life, not just my mood. I sleep too much some days and barely at all on others, and I’m always exhausted no matter what. My family says I need to think more positively, but it doesn't feel that simple. Even small jobs around the house seem impossible some mornings. I don't know if all these body aches and constant tiredness come from depression or if something else has been missed. I keep asking, can depression slowly affect physical health, too?

Kindly advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

The physical symptoms you’re describing are the neurovegetative symptoms of depression.

These symptoms are part of major depressive disorder itself. With increasing age, these symptoms feel doubled because aging also causes some level of body pain, mental slowing and generalized weakness.

The presentation of depression varies from one individual to another. Therefore, some people with major depressive disorder may experience predominantly physical symptoms such as fatigue, generalized body aches, headaches, or other somatic complaints.

Those who have never experienced depression may not fully understand the nature of the illness. Therefore, their reactions to your condition can be understandable.

Sometimes people who have been suffering with major depression also have

  1. Low vitamin D levels.

  2. Hypothyroidism.

  3. Low vitamin B12 levels.

Therefore, get these blood tests done too.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further questions.

Thank you.
