What are the effects of depression on cognitive skills?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother has been struggling with depression for years, and I have noticed this seems to be impacting her cognitive abilities more lately. She has trouble concentrating, remembering things, and making decisions. As her daughter, I am worried. What effects can depression have on cognitive skills like memory, attention, and executive function? Are these effects temporary during depressive episodes or can long-term depression cause permanent cognitive decline? What lifestyle changes or treatments could help protect or improve her cognitive function? I want to understand the connection between depression and cognitive impairment so that I can better support my mother's overall mental health. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your situation and your concern about your mother.

It is commendable that you want to support your mother during this challenging time. Depression can indeed have significant effects on cognitive function. It often impacts memory, attention, and executive function, making it difficult to concentrate, remember things, and make decisions. These effects can vary from person to person and may fluctuate during depressive episodes, but in some cases, especially with long-term or severe depression, cognitive decline can become more persistent.

Long-term depression can potentially lead to structural changes in the brain that affect cognitive abilities. However, the good news is that cognitive impairment from depression is often reversible with appropriate treatment. Lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, good sleep hygiene, and social support can all contribute to improved cognitive function. Additionally, therapy, medication, or a combination of both can help manage depression symptoms and alleviate cognitive impairment. You should take your mother to the nearest psychiatrist for detailed evaluation and management.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need some help.

Thank you
