What is adult-onset ADD?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a student and I have gone through a very tough year. Although I barely managed to pass all of my modules in the end, I had really depressing moments where lack of self-esteem, feelings of hate against me, eating disorders especially compulsive eating and purges after that, and also quite had an abusive masturbation pattern, dominated my private life and affected my social life. There were moments during which I did not leave my home for days, nor even take care of myself (I live alone). I tried to look for professional help when I realized my compulsive eating and bulimia were out of hand, but the psychologist, psychiatrists, and counselors I had appointments with did not do much. At least the counselor listened to me and offered advice, the other people just wanted my money without really making much effort to help me through this.

I am writing this now because I am in desperate need of help. I think I am missing a lot from my social life and definitely, my academic life will go worse unless I make a change in my current lifestyle. Another reason why I am writing this is because when I told a friend that I just could not focus on work, he suggested that I could use some of the pills he had. I had never taken any smart pills before, so I searched online for what it was before having it. It was Vyvanse, and I can not express the effect it had on me. It did not only keep me working on my studies for several hours, but I completely forgot about eating compulsively and purging afterward. I just did not feel the need to do so. I used that pill for an exam, and a few weeks later I took another one. I was worried that I could become addicted so I did not take anymore before consulting a professional. The thing is that Vyvanse can not be found here, not even with a medical prescription, and I went back to my compulsive eating, purges, and depression feelings all day and night long.

I would like to know your opinion on that. What should I do? I just want to recover from this. The truth is that Vyvanse helped me during those days as nothing else. I owe to it my passing of exams, but more importantly, I owe to it the strength to overcome my addictions to those compulsive manners and my depression during those brief periods that I used it.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Based on the history and complaints you have mentioned we can go towards the following possible diagnoses-

  1. Mild to moderate depression with social anxiety.

  2. Adult onset ADD (attention deficit disorder).

  3. Anxiety disorder.

For making a proper diagnosis, a detailed history and evaluation by a psychiatrist are needed. Your main symptoms are low focus, poor concentration in studies, low self-esteem, anger towards yourself, poor social interaction, difficulty leaving the house at times, and poor performance in studies. These symptoms could be due to some mood disturbance or depression. Response to Vyvanse (Lisdexamfetamine) also points towards ADD or Mood disturbance.

But taking Vyvanse without a prescription is not a good idea. Vyvanse is known to result in significant tolerance and is highly addicting. This could prove very harmful in the future. So I would not advise you to take this drug without consulting a psychiatrist.

So, please consult a psychiatrist and discuss about the management of your symptoms.

Take care.

Regards.
