Is it possible to prevent diabetes in children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am worried about my son's health. My husband has diabetes and is on insulin. Is there a chance that my 10-year-old son could inherit diabetes genetically? If so, can it be prevented? What are the initial signs of diabetes that I should be aware of? What are its risk factors, and how can I protect my son? I have only one son, and I want him to be healthy always. Right now, he is healthy and does not have any issues. I need your guidance on this.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The likelihood of your son developing diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, can be influenced by genetics, especially since your husband has diabetes. Here is a detailed breakdown:

Genetic risk:

  1. Type 1 diabetes: This is an autoimmune condition, and while genetics play a role, it is not as directly inherited as type 2. The risk increases if a parent has type 1 diabetes, but it is still relatively low.

  2. Type 2 diabetes: This has a stronger genetic link. If one parent has type 2 diabetes, the child's risk can be significantly higher.

Prevention:

  1. Healthy diet: Encourage a balanced and nutritious diet.

  2. Regular exercise.

  3. Healthy weight.

  4. Regular check-ups: Monitor your son's blood sugar levels and overall health to catch any early signs of diabetes.

Regular consultations with a pediatrician can also help monitor your son's health and implement preventive strategies effectively.

I hope this information helps you, and please reach out if you have any doubts.

Thank you.
