Can Loperamide treat diarrhea caused by an antibiotic?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently took an antibiotic injection for STI (sexually transmitted infections) but now I have diarrhea. I brought something to stop it, a Cipla Loperamide but have not used it. I wanted to check if that is fine.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Your diarrhea after an antibiotic injection for an STI (sexually transmitted infection) is likely due to the antibiotic disrupting your gut bacteria. This is called antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) and can last for days to weeks.

Is it safe to take Loperamide (Cipla Loperamide)?

Yes, but with caution. Loperamide helps slow down diarrhea, but it is not always the best option after antibiotics because:

  1. If the diarrhea is due to Clostridium difficile (C. diff), loperamide can trap harmful bacteria in the gut and worsen the infection.

  2. If you have a fever, blood in stool, or severe cramping, you should avoid Loperamide and see a doctor instead.

Better ways to manage the diarrhea:

  1. Rehydrate: Drink electrolyte solutions like ORS (oral rehydration solution) or plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

  2. Probiotics: Try yogurt or probiotic supplements to help restore gut bacteria.

  3. Mild diet: Eat bananas, rice, toast, and boiled potatoes to ease digestion.

  4. Monitor symptoms: If diarrhea continues for more than ten days, worsens, or includes blood or mucus, see a doctor.

Consult with your specialist before administering any drugs.

I hope this has helped you.
