How to manage watery loose motion in my nine-month-old baby?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My baby is nine months old. She has continuously passed watery loose motion for the last few weeks. So, please suggest what I should do? Any medicine or something else?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand how worrying it must be to see your baby have persistent loose stools, especially for such a long time. Since your nine-month-old daughter has been having watery or milky loose motions for almost two months with little improvement despite treatment, this needs careful evaluation.
Chronic diarrhea in infants can be due to several causes prolonged infections (bacterial or parasitic), post-infectious lactose intolerance, food allergies (especially to cow’s milk or formula), or malabsorption conditions. Sometimes, even frequent antibiotic use can disturb the gut flora and worsen loose stools. Currently, the most crucial step is to prevent dehydration.
Continue giving oral rehydration solution (ORS) in frequent small sips after every stool. You can also continue zinc supplement syrup once daily, as zinc helps in the recovery of the intestinal lining. Cefixime oral drops (an antibiotic) should only be given if your doctor confirms a bacterial infection through stool tests, as unnecessary antibiotics can worsen diarrhea.
Feed your baby easily digestible foods, rice water, mashed banana, apple puree, and curd, and if you are breastfeeding, continue to breastfeed regularly. Avoid packaged juices or formula changes without consulting a medical professional.
Since the problem has lasted for weeks, it is important to do a stool routine and culture test to check for infection or malabsorption, and your pediatrician may also suggest checking for lactose intolerance or celiac screen if needed. If your baby is not gaining weight, seems very tired, has blood or mucus in stools, or shows signs of dehydration (dry tongue, less urine, sunken eyes), please seek medical attention urgently.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
