How to treat diarrhea and stomach bugs in toddlers?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My nine-month-old daughter has been having diarrhea consistently for about a week. It is yellow and watery. She had a stomach bug two weeks ago, and then her stools returned to normal. About six days ago, she began having diarrhea again, and it has been watery in consistency. She has not had a fever and has been drinking normally.

We have added Pedialyte to her fluid intake. I would like to know whether she needs to see a doctor or if it is possible that she caught two stomach bugs back to back and her system is still recovering.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Based on the limited information provided, she has had two episodes of diarrhea within a few weeks. She does not have a fever or vomiting and is accepting oral feeds. If she is active and passing urine well, you can continue to manage her at home. It is good that you are already giving her oral rehydration solution such as Pedialyte.

I suggest getting a stool test done to determine the cause, including stool routine analysis, stool examination for ova and cysts, stool for reducing substances, and stool testing for rotavirus and HMPV (human metapneumovirus). Continue giving Pedialyte 50 to 75 milliliters after each loose motion.

You may give a Sporlac sachet, half a packet mixed in half a cup of water, twice daily for three days. Provide a regular bland diet such as rice, potatoes, bananas, and apples. Continue milk, and if she is breastfeeding, continue breastfeeding. Follow up after receiving the stool report.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
