Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My girlfriend has had constant diarrhea and extreme tiredness for eight days. She is eating very little and trying to drink water, but I do not know if she is getting enough. She was seen by a doctor at a clinic yesterday and was given tests for blood, stool, and anemia. We were traveling for one week, and diarrhea began the next day we reached home. The doctor told her to return next week (one week from today) for the results of her tests. The doctor did not advise us on what she is supposed to do for her sickness while she waits for the test results, and she is feeling worse than she did yesterday with constant diarrhea. The only thing we were told is that she is very anemic, according to the test. I do not know how to help her get through this next week, and we both are very concerned that she continues to have heavy diarrhea and is getting weaker. We also do not know how to tell if her situation requires immediate medical attention. What do you recommend?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Most importantly, have ORS (oral rehydration solution) 100 to 200 ml with each stool and keep herself rehydrated. Drink as much as possible. She should also visit the hospital to assess her hydration status and if needed, intravenous fluids. Get her blood pressure and pulse rate checked if possible. A pulse rate persistently more than 100 or 110 beats per minute suggests that she is too much dehydrated. She should be treated empirically, and she should be prescribed the following medicines.

(Consult your specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.)

1. Capsule Vizylac (Lactic Acid Bacillus) thrice a day for five days.

2. Norfloxacin and Tinidazole tablets two times a day.

3. Tablet Pantoprazole before breakfast once a day for five days.

4. Tablet Racecadotril 100 mg whenever needed up to three times a day to reduce stool frequency and quantity up to a maximum of seven days.

Thank you.
