How to treat a persistent dry cough effectively?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing a persistent dry cough for the past two weeks. When I cough, there is no mucus or phlegm, and I am unsure how to relieve it. I have tried home remedies, such as drinking a hot infusion of pepper, cumin seeds, and ginger at night. While it provided temporary relief, the cough returned the next morning.

This constant coughing is affecting my ability to talk or laugh comfortably. Please suggest an effective remedy or treatment to help alleviate this persistent dry cough. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

A dry cough lasting for two weeks could be caused by various factors, including allergies, postnasal drip, acid reflux, or an infection. Since home remedies have only provided temporary relief, you may require additional treatment.

Remedies to try

  1. Hydration – Drink plenty of warm fluids such as herbal teas, warm water with honey, or broths to help soothe your throat.
  2. Honey and turmeric – Mix one teaspoon of honey with a pinch of turmeric and take it twice daily. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce throat irritation.
  3. Steam inhalation – Inhale steam with a few drops of eucalyptus or peppermint oil to help clear airway irritation and loosen mucus.
  4. Saltwater gargle – Gargling with warm salt water can soothe the throat and reduce inflammation.
  5. Avoid irritants – Stay away from smoke, dust, strong perfumes, and pollutants, as these can worsen your cough.
  6. Check for acid reflux – If your cough worsens at night or after eating, it could be due to gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD (a chronic digestive disorder that occurs when stomach contents leak into the esophagus). Avoid spicy, acidic, or fatty foods, and try sleeping with your head elevated to reduce reflux symptoms.
  7. When to see a doctor

    Seek medical attention if:

    1. The cough lasts for more than three weeks.
    2. You experience shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, or blood in your cough.
    3. You have a history of asthma, allergies, or acid reflux, which may be contributing to the cough.
    4. The cough is persistent and disruptive, interfering with daily activities.
    5. If necessary, a doctor may recommend antihistamines, cough suppressants, inhalers, or additional tests to determine the underlying cause.

      I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

      Thank you.
