Can a pet cat's exposure worsen my kids' dust allergy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have two children, aged eight and five, who have confirmed dust allergies. We did a prick test to confirm it. Asthma is controlled by inhaler Foracort 100 in rainy and cold months. Kids are asking for a pet cat. Would having a pet cat at home worsen their allergy in any way?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query and understand your concern.

As the prick test showed only dust allergy, your children are not currently cat-allergic, so a cat will not automatically worsen their asthma right away. The concern is more about what can happen over time. Cat allergen is very light; it spreads through the house easily and sticks to bedding, sofas, and carpets. In children who already have asthma and an allergic tendency, living with a cat can sometimes lead to them developing a cat allergy later, and then symptoms start flaring more often.

There are families where things are fine for months after getting a cat, and then gradually the child begins to get sneezing, itchy eyes, a blocked nose, a night cough, or wheeze that was not there before. When that happens, control becomes harder unless exposure is reduced.

So it is not a definite, but there is a real future risk you should weigh before making a long-term commitment. If you do decide to keep a cat, keep it strictly out of the bedrooms. Avoid carpets and heavy curtains as much as possible, and clean soft surfaces regularly. These steps reduce allergen load and make flares less likely.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
