How to manage accidental ear drop use in an infant's nose?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I accidentally gave my 9-month-old son Neo Ear Well drops (meant for the ear) in his nose. Is this a cause for concern?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Based on the limited information provided, the ear drops contain four medications: an antibiotic, an antifungal, a steroid, and a painkiller.

If the painkiller has entered the throat, it could temporarily numb the area, making swallowing difficult. During this time, feeding may be risky.

If the other medications were ingested in small amounts through the nose, they should not harm your son.

Since you likely used only one or two drops, the total amount is minimal, and it is unlikely to have reached the throat. The chances of any side effects are very low.

If your son is otherwise normal—active, playful, and without any breathing difficulties or vomiting—avoid giving him anything to eat or drink for about two hours. After that, offer a small amount of plain water. If he swallows it without issue, you can try a small amount of semiliquid food. Wait another 20-30 minutes to see if he tolerates it well without vomiting. If everything goes smoothly, no further action is needed.

However, if he becomes unusually sleepy, shows signs of breathing difficulty, or starts vomiting, take him to the hospital immediately for a full check-up and observation.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for responding.

He seems to be normal and active now, and he has had both water and formula without any issues.

  1. Should I be concerned about any potential future problems? I am worried he might experience throat pain or numbness later on.

  2. Do I need to take any further action?

  3. Also, he has had a cough and cold for the past week and is currently on medication. Is it okay to use an air conditioner in this situation?

Kindly assist.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I am glad to hear that he is doing well, has accepted fluids without any issues, and is not showing any other symptoms. Based on this, there is no need to worry—there should not be any future problems related to the ear drops, and no treatment is required.

Regarding his cold and cough, using an air conditioner is fine, but make sure the vents are positioned so that the cold air is not blowing directly on him. It is also best to maintain a room temperature of around 23-24°C.

I hope this answers your query.

Please feel free to reach out if you need further assistance.

Thank you.
