How to treat severe ear pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello Doctor,

I am 30 years old and weigh 176.37 pounds. I have been experiencing severe ear pain for almost 10 days. I had it examined by a doctor and took the prescribed medication, but I did not experience any relief. Now, in addition to the pain, I am also experiencing difficulty in hearing. I am very concerned and would like to know the solution. Please help me.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Based on your symptoms, I believe you may have developed otalgia, which is ear pain, possibly due to an infection. To confirm this, I suggest that you undergo an ear swab test and share the results once available.

In the meantime, I suggest you take the following:

  • Co-Amoxiclav 625 mg (Antibiotic – penicillin): Take two tablets orally (PO BID) twice daily for one week.
  • Chloramphenicol 0.1% ear drops (antibiotic – amphenicol): Apply topically into the affected ear twice daily for one week.
  • Ibuprofen 400 mg (analgesic/anti-inflammatory—non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug): Take two tablets orally, twice daily (PO BID) for one week.

Please ensure that you do not self-medicate without professional guidance.

If symptoms worsen or persist, it is important to schedule a follow-up appointment for a physical evaluation.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
