Can I‑pill affect period timing or delay next cycle?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took an I‑pill and got my period within seven days, which is on the 15th day of my regular cycle. What is the chance of pregnancy, and when will I get my next period?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Ali Osman

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Normally, one must take one I‑pill (emergency contraceptive pill) within 72 hours of intercourse for protection. One I‑pill is a tablet of Levonorgestrel 0.75 mg, and the usual dose is two tablets. The mechanism of action of the I‑pill is as follows: it inhibits ovulation, prevents fertilization, and increases cervical mucus thickness, which makes penetration of sperm into the cervix more difficult. It provides approximately 90 percent protection. If you receive your period one week after taking the I‑pill, that means no pregnancy has occurred; if pregnancy were present, bleeding would not have occurred.

The normal cycle features a frequency of 24 to 38 days, a duration of up to eight days, regularity with variation between the shortest and longest cycle of less than seven to nine days, and a normal flow.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I got my period 28 days ago, which was 15 days early due to taking an I‑pill. I have a regular menstrual cycle. When can I expect my next period? Will there be any delays? Is my early period withdrawal bleeding? I would appreciate some clarity on this.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

  2. How many days do you bleed?

  3. How many pads do you use?

  4. Is there any association with the passage of clots?

  5. Is there any history of dysmenorrhea or any history of dyspareunia?

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

My menstrual cycle lasts between 28 and 30 days. I experience bleeding for five days each cycle. I use three pads per day during the first two days, and two pads per day for the remaining days. I have no clotting. I experience no dysmenorrhea and no dyspareunia. Do I need to take a pregnancy test? If yes, when would be the most appropriate time to do so?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Ali Osman

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

It seems like your menstrual cycle is normal, so a home pregnancy test is not necessary right now. If you would still like to take one, it is best to wait until the day your next period is expected this month.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
