Is sunlight good or bad for eczema?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 38 years old and have mild to moderate eczema. I have noticed that sometimes my skin improves after being in the sun, but other times it feels worse.
I wanted to ask if sunlight actually helps eczema or if the improvement is only temporary. I am also unsure how much sun exposure is safe, as I do not want to damage my skin while managing eczema.
Is there a recommended way to balance this?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I have read your query and understand your concern.
What you are experiencing is common in eczema (a condition that causes your skin to become dry, itchy, and bumpy). Sunlight can help in some cases because ultraviolet light reduces skin inflammation. This is why controlled light therapy is used as a treatment. However, natural sunlight is not consistent so the effects can vary.
Mild sun exposure may improve symptoms temporarily, but excessive exposure can dry the skin, increase irritation, and trigger flare-ups. Heat and sweating can also worsen itching, and sunburn can aggravate eczema.
A balanced approach is recommended. Short exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes, a few times a week, preferably in the early morning or late evening, may be beneficial. Avoid strong midday sun. Applying a moisturizer after sun exposure can help maintain the skin barrier.
If your skin worsens in the sun, it is better to limit exposure. For more persistent eczema, medically supervised light therapy may be a safer and more effective option.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer.
