Which eczema treatment is safe for me during pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello Doctor,

I have had eczema since my teenage years, but it has flared up significantly after I recently stopped taking my birth control pills. I did not realize that hormonal changes could have such a strong impact on my skin. I am also planning to try for a baby soon, and I am concerned about which medications are safe to use during pregnancy. I have used topical steroid creams in the past, but I have read that they might not be safe during pregnancy. Additionally, the itchiness and sleep disturbances are causing me a lot of stress. What eczema treatments are considered safe while trying to conceive or during pregnancy? Is it acceptable to use steroid creams occasionally during pregnancy?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.I understand your concern.

Hormonal changes, such as stopping birth control pills, can trigger eczema flare-ups because hormones like estrogen and progesterone affect the skin’s barrier function and inflammation. Many women experience skin changes during hormonal shifts or pregnancy. The good news is that most topical steroid creams, especially low to moderate strength ones like Hydrocortisone (1%), are generally safe for short-term or localized use while trying to conceive or during pregnancy, but they should be used sparingly and under medical supervision.

Safe eczema management also includes frequent moisturizing with fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products, avoiding triggers such as harsh soaps and stress, and, if needed, using mild antihistamines after consulting your doctor. For more severe cases, a dermatologist may recommend phototherapy, a safe, non-drug option during pregnancy. Managing stress and ensuring good sleep are also important because both can worsen eczema. With proper care and guidance, you can manage your symptoms safely while preparing for pregnancy.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
