Why does household cleaning trigger my eczema flares at 32?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 32 years old and have noticed that my eczema flares up badly whenever I do household cleaning, especially when using detergents or floor cleaners.

This made me wonder why my eczema gets worse when I clean the house, as the pattern is quite consistent. Even when I use gloves, I still sometimes experience irritation.

Is this due to chemical exposure or something else? I am trying to manage daily chores without triggering my skin, but it is becoming difficult.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and understand your concern.

This is a common pattern seen in eczema (a condition that causes your skin to become dry, itchy, and bumpy). The most likely cause is irritant contact from cleaning products. Detergents, floor cleaners, and soaps can strip the natural protective barrier of the skin, making it dry and more sensitive. Once this barrier is weakened, even water and friction can trigger flare-ups.

Frequent exposure to water and cleaning agents, as well as sweating inside gloves, can further worsen irritation. In some cases, there may also be an allergic reaction to specific ingredients in these products.

To reduce flares, you can use cotton gloves inside protective gloves, apply a thick moisturizer before and after cleaning, and switch to mild, fragrance-free cleaning products. Limiting prolonged wet work can also help.

If symptoms continue despite these measures, a patch test may be required to check for contact allergies.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer.

Thank you.
