Why is my eczema moisturizer not working anymore?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 36 years old and have been using a moisturizer for years for my eczema, and it always worked well until recently. Now it feels like my skin is not responding the same way, and dryness and irritation are coming back more often.

This made me wonder what happens when a moisturizer stops working after years, as I have not changed anything else in my routine. Can the skin get used to a product over time, or does eczema itself change?

I am confused about whether I should switch products or adjust something else.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and understand your concern.

What you are experiencing is quite common in long-standing eczema (a condition that causes your skin to become dry, itchy and bumpy). It is not that your skin becomes “used to” a moisturizer in the way medicines lose effectiveness. More often, the eczema itself changes over time.

Factors such as stress, weather changes, sweating, or changes in the skin barrier can make the same product feel less effective. Your skin barrier may be more compromised now, so a basic moisturizer alone may not be sufficient during flare-ups.

In some cases, mild sensitivity to an ingredient can develop even after long-term use. Environmental factors such as hot showers, air conditioning, or seasonal changes can also worsen dryness.

You can continue moisturizing, but increase the frequency, especially during dry periods. Using a thicker or more occlusive product at night may help. During flare-ups, a short course of anti-inflammatory treatment may be needed rather than relying on moisturizers alone.

If the current product is no longer helpful, switching to a different formulation can be considered. Sometimes, treatment needs adjustment based on how the condition evolves.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer.

Thank you.
