What is the best diet to follow for an enlarged liver?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

A blood sample revealed my enlarged liver and the doctor advised me to cut back on red meat and other foods like chicken. I can recall overeating red meat and stopping for chicken, but now I fear I might have eaten too much protein because my urine is bubbly.

I was also low on vitamin D and have finished an entire bottle of vitamin D at 5000 IU (international units). I have been blood tested, and that is how the doctor said to eat less red meat and prescribed vitamin D.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

You are right about the importance of a healthy diet. I would suggest the following:

1. Eat plenty of:

- Green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, collard greens).

- High-fiber foods (fruits, legumes, whole grains).

- Lean proteins (poultry, fish, plant-based options).

- Healthy fats (avocado, nuts, olive oil).

2. Limit or avoid:

- Red meat.

- Processed meats.

- Sugary drinks (soda, sports drinks, sweet tea).

- Refined carbohydrates (white bread, sugary snacks).

- Saturated and trans fats (butter, lard, processed snacks).

Additional Tips:

  1. Exercise regularly: Aim for 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise.

  2. Maintain a healthy weight: Aim for a BMI (body mass index) between 18.5 and 24.9.

  3. Limit alcohol consumption: Avoid sugary drinks, including wine.

  4. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

  5. Manage stress: Engage in stress-reducing activities like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing.

Specific Foods to Include:

  1. Berries (antioxidant-rich).

  2. Fatty fish (omega-3 rich).

  3. Sweet potatoes (high in fiber and antioxidants).

  4. Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, black beans).

  5. Whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat).

Foods to Avoid:

  1. Fried foods.

  2. Processed meats (hot dogs, sausages).

  3. High-sugar foods (candy, baked goods).

  4. Refined grains (white bread, sugary cereals).

  5. Foods high in saturated fats (butter, lard).

Supplements:

Consult your doctor before adding supplements to your diet. Potential beneficial supplements include:

  1. Omega-3 fatty acids.

  2. Vitamin E.

  3. Vitamin D.

  4. Probiotics.

  5. Milk thistle.

Monitor Your Progress:

Regularly check your:

  1. Liver enzymes like ALT (alanine aminotransferase) and AST (aspartate aminotransferase).

  2. Fasting glucose and insulin levels.

  3. Cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

  4. Body weight and BMI.

  5. Waist circumference.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
