What is the cause and treatment of nasal bleeding?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My husband had a bleeding nose for the past few days. The bleeding stops for some time and then continues again. Despite consulting a specialist and taking medicines, his condition has not improved. His nose is still bleeding. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern. Epistaxis is a quite common event, particularly in the elderly. Vessels become friable and stiff and tend to bleed easily. Higher blood pressure can likely be a cause of epistaxis, and in 50 % of cases, there may be no cause. I suggest doing home remedies like pinching the nose and blowing away any clot that might have collected. I also suggest avoiding coughing or straining too forcefully, which might open up vessels again and start bleeding again. Avoid nose-picking also. If the home remedies do not work, I suggest you get nasal packing done for him.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
