What could be the reason for recurrent erosive gastritis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had an issue for several years where I felt suffocated after eating, and drinking water relieved the pain. However, at some point, it also worsened; when I drank water, I felt a burning sensation in my throat. Finally, this year after an endoscopy, I was diagnosed with erosive gastritis. For three months, I took PPIs, had been on a strict diet, and took medications against Helicobacter pylori.

After three months, I started to ease the diet, and a month later, the symptoms came back. They were as bad as how they used to be before the diet. So I went to another doctor, had another endoscopy, and was again diagnosed with erosive gastritis. I had a helicobacter pylori test, which came back negative. I am on a diet and took PPIs again for one month, which I stopped a month ago. My symptoms sometimes return, and they can be mild or severe. How should I treat erosive gastritis?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I reviewed your query. Erosive gastritis is not a condition that lasts lifelong. Your symptoms are more of esophagitis rather than gastritis. I want to review both endoscopies report if possible. Helicobacter pylori is one of the causes; if it is negative, you must be evaluated for other possible causes, including medicine, especially painkillers or any other regular side effects of certain medicines, stress, smoking, alcoholism, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, any unintentional weight loss, etc.

I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below.

  1. Take antacid syrup like Gaviscon (Sodium Alginate, Sodium Carbonate, and Calcium Carbonate) 10 ml after every meal and at night as needed.
  2. Consume healthy and balanced diet, avoid spicy meals and eating out.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk to them and take medications with their consent.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
