It is a superficial form of bacterial infection or cellulitis (bacterial infection of subcutaneous tissue) affecting the skin. It can occur in people of any age group. It is caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus. The affected part of the skin is very sharp, red, swollen, and may bleed sometimes. In infants, it occurs around the umbilical cord. Cold packs can relieve slight discomfort. Oral or intravenous penicillin is generally used to treat this condition.
