What are the reasons for pain after E.coli treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 19 years old. I recently got treated for a heavy growth of E. coli in my urine culture, and now, after that, I have been having pains moving from my upper chest to below my ribs to my right lower back to my waist to my pelvis, and sometimes my shoulders.

I have done an X-ray, and it showed normal findings. I am scared that I could be dying. What should I do? Last time I checked, my PCV was 32 percent.

Could it be sepsis or a kidney issue?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The pain you are describing, moving from your chest to your lower back, waist, and pelvis after a recent E.coli (Escherichia) infection, could indicate a lingering urinary tract or kidney infection.

Given your recent E. coli infection and ongoing pain, it is understandable to be worried, but sepsis would typically present with fever, chills, rapid heartbeat, and feeling very unwell. Your normal X-ray is reassuring, and at 19 years, serious cardiac causes are unlikely.

However, pain moving from chest to back and pelvis could be muscular, nerve-related, or even kidney-related, especially after a UTI (urinary tract infection). A PCV (packed cell volume) of 32 percent is slightly low but not dangerous. I recommend consulting me after further tests (kidney function, repeat urine test) and possibly an ultrasound to rule out any kidney or urinary tract issues.

Do not panic, most causes are manageable with the right diagnosis. Are you currently having a fever or burning while urinating?

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach out to me again.

Thank you.
