Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 30 year old female. I seek your guidance and expertise on the hormone estrogen, as I believe it plays a crucial role in women's health, and I would like to understand its functions and implications. I have several questions related to estrogen.

  1. What is estrogen, and what are its primary functions in the female body?
  2. How does estrogen affect the menstrual cycle, and what changes in estrogen levels are normal throughout the menstrual cycle?
  3. Are there any risks or health conditions that occur with imbalanced estrogen levels, such as estrogen dominance or deficiency, and how can one recognize and address these issues?
  4. Can you recommend lifestyle and dietary choices that might support healthy estrogen levels and women's overall well-being?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I have answered your questions briefly.

  1. Estrogen is a female steroid hormone that is released by the ovaries for the normal menstrual cycle function.
  2. The level of estrogen mostly increases in the initial half of the cycle which triggers the other hormone estrogen to rise in the next half and thereby the menstrual cycle occurs. It deposits the endometrial layers and thereby helps to have a normal cycle if in adequate amounts. Other functions are related to the development of breasts and also the height of the female body.
  3. In syndromic females where estrogen is short, the height is stunted and there is no development of female sexual characteristics. However, if the amount of fat is high, there is excess making of estrogen and thereby more fat deposition.
  4. When taken as medication, estrogen has to be used with caution since it has side effects by its effect on various organs.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
