What can cause chest pain and sweating while running?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I experience excessive sweating in my hands and feet, and I occasionally feel sharp, piercing pain in my chest, particularly when I run. This discomfort typically strikes suddenly on the left side of my chest and lasts for a brief moment.

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

The symptoms you are describing, such as excessive sweating of the hands and feet along with occasional sharp chest pain during running, are quite common in teenagers and are often not related to heart disease.

The sweating you experience is most likely due to a condition called primary hyperhidrosis, which results from overactivity of the sweat glands, especially in the palms and soles. While it is harmless, it can be uncomfortable or embarrassing.

Treatment options include antiperspirant creams, prescription medications, or a consultation with a dermatologist if it interferes with your daily activities.

Regarding the chest pain, the short, sharp, and jerking type of pain that appears during or after running and lasts only for a brief period is usually muscular or due to chest wall strain, posture, or breathing patterns. This is especially true since you are young and otherwise healthy.

However, chest pain can sometimes have other causes, such as acid reflux or asthma. For now, make sure to stay hydrated, warm up before exercising, and pay attention to whether the pain becomes more frequent, severe, or occurs even at rest. If that happens, seek medical attention promptly.

I hope this answers your query. Feel free to reach out anytime.

Thank you.
