Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 7-month-old baby boy occasionally fixes his gaze on some source of light, and, in an instant, his eyes move almost backward. This has occurred several times already, and I’m scared.
Does this happen normally with infants, or does it indicate a certain medical condition that needs a checkup?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
It is quite common for babies to have their eyes roll upward when they abruptly focus on a bright light or during the period when they fall asleep or wake up. However, if this is happening for just a brief moment and your baby seems to be active afterward, it might be simply a normal reaction.
However, if you notice that your baby aged seven months rolls his eyes backward frequently, especially if it does not occur due to a bright light, lasts for more than several seconds, or is associated with other symptoms.
If these symptoms include staring, stiffening of the body, arm and leg jerking, lip smacking, lack of response, and excessive drowsiness after the event, then it is better to see a pediatrician or pediatric neurologist as soon as possible since it can be indicative of a seizure disorder.
For now, I would recommend recording an episode on your phone in order to show a video to your doctor.
In case the episodes continue for a prolonged period, come with abnormal limb movements, problems with breathing, bluish coloring of the lips and/or face, unconsciousness, or if your baby does not return to his normal behavior after the episodes, I would recommend seeking urgent medical assistance.
In order to provide you with more accurate advice, let me know the following details:
How long do the episodes last, approximately?
Do they occur only in bright light, or do they occur at other times too?
Does he respond to you calling his name or touching him during his attack?
Has he had any stiffness in his body or any jerking of his limbs?
Has he had any fever or sickness recently?
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
