Are spider-like eye floaters and light flashes serious?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

A few days ago, I noticed spider-like floaters in my eye when I woke up. When I look to the left, I also see a small flashing light, but my vision is otherwise clear; there is no blurring or cloudiness. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand how sudden floaters and flashes of light in your eye can feel worrying.

The “spider-like floaters” you are seeing are small, moving spots or shapes in your vision. They are often caused by changes in the vitreous gel, the clear, jelly-like substance that fills the inside of the eye. As we age, this gel can shrink or pull slightly away from the back of the eye, a process called posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). This is usually harmless.

However, when floaters appear suddenly along with flashing lights, it can sometimes mean that the gel is tugging on the retina (the thin, light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye). In rare cases, this traction can lead to a retinal tear or detachment, which requires immediate medical attention to prevent vision loss.

It is good that your vision is clear and you have no eye pain, as those are reassuring signs. But these do not completely rule out a retinal issue.

What you should do:

Book an urgent appointment with an eye specialist (ophthalmologist) within the next 24 hours for a detailed eye examination.

If you notice any of the following, seek emergency care right away:

  • A dark shadow or curtain moving across your vision.

  • A sudden increase in floaters or flashing lights.

  • Blurred or distorted vision.

Also, if you have high blood pressure, please mention it to your doctor. Uncontrolled pressure can sometimes affect the tiny blood vessels in the retina.

For now, try to avoid rubbing your eyes or heavy straining, and get checked as soon as possible for peace of mind and safety.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
