What are the causes of eye redness and pain post retinal detachment surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

About a month ago, my father underwent retinal detachment surgery, and his follow-up appointments with the ophthalmologist indicated a successful outcome. However, since last night, he has been experiencing sudden pain both inside and around his eye, which is causing him distress. I also observed that his eye appears to be red. In response to the pain, he took Paracetamol, which provided some relief at certain points during the day, but the pain returned later. My father reached out to the doctor who performed the eye surgery and explained his symptoms. The doctor advised him that as long as his vision remains clear and there are no flashes of light, he should continue washing the eye with water, and the pain is expected to subside eventually. I would appreciate a second opinion from you to determine if this pain is something that should cause concern.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I recommend reassessing his vision by covering the unaffected eye and then reevaluating the post-operative eye's vision. If the vision appears to be fine, I would advise starting the following treatment:

1. Eye drops - Nepafenac 0.3 %, to be administered three times a day.

2. Oral painkillers.

3. Antibiotic eye drops.

4. Lubricant eye drops are to be used four times a day.

If the pain persists even after a week of this treatment, it is essential to have his intraocular pressure reexamined. I hope this course of action helps resolve the issue.

Thank you for consulting me.

You can always come back and reach me at icliniq.com.
