Can using computers and smartphones cause dry eyes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I suffer for about half a year from something like an eye strain. Almost every morning I cannot really concentrate or think clearly when I look at my phone or computer for a while. This feeling then persists if I keep looking at the phone, but if not it usually goes away in about an hour. It is a huge problem for me, for example when I have to do my work on a computer or when my friend just simply wants to show me something on their phone. And I also mentioned that it is usually in the morning because for some reason it tends to get better as the day goes on. And it also gets better when I exercise. Nonetheless, when I woke up the next day, it was the same problem. My dominant eye also tends to dry up when I cannot think clearly after looking at the phone. It is really weird and it is oppressing my life in a serious way. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear any of them. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Using computers, and smartphones causes dry eye due to decreased blink rate. Take frequent breaks. Look at far objects as eyes are strained looking at the close objects for a long time. Keep brightness to a minimum. Use Flogel HA eye drops (Sodium hyaluronate 0.1 %) one drop four times a day. Use Antiglare glasses. Get your eyes tested to know if you require spectacles. Thank you.
