Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
The last ophthalmologist I went to told me that I have been suffering from eye styes, but I have been having them for almost six months now. They are not improving but rather worsening after using the medication he prescribed. I have been having these eye styes for almost six months now. In my last appointment, an ophthalmologist gave me a prescription, but it has not improved, but rather worsened. Both my eyes are painful even without touching them.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
It sounds like you are dealing with a chronic and persistent problem, and the fact that the styes have continued for almost six months and even worsened despite treatment suggests that this may no longer be a simple stye. Recurrent or long-lasting eyelid swellings are often due to conditions like chronic blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, or chalazia rather than repeated acute styes. These conditions cause the oil glands in the eyelids to remain blocked, leading to ongoing inflammation, swelling, and sometimes infection.
If the medication your ophthalmologist prescribed made things worse, it may mean that either the underlying cause was not correctly identified or that you reacted to the treatment. Your very low body weight for your height also raises concern about nutritional or systemic issues that could be affecting your ability to heal, such as vitamin deficiencies, reduced immunity, or hormonal imbalance.
At this stage, you need a detailed re-evaluation by another ophthalmologist, ideally one who specializes in eyelid disease or oculoplastics. They can examine your eyelid glands, check for chronic inflammation, look for rosacea-related eye diseases, and rule out rare causes, such as sebaceous gland carcinoma, if a swelling has been present for many months.
Treatments often include warm compresses twice daily, lid hygiene, oral doxycycline for gland inflammation, steroid antibiotic combination ointments if needed, and, in stubborn cases, incision and curettage. If you are comfortable, please let me know what medications you were prescribed and whether the swelling is painful, red, or firm so I can guide you more accurately.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
