Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My mother-in-law has been suffering from amyloidosis for several years. Now, I am scared that my spouse and children will get it from her. Does this continue through generations? What are the possibilities that my husband will be affected by? Should he be tested now? Is it possible to prevent this? I have two kids, ages seven and twelve. How can I safeguard them? Is this condition curable? Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
I can understand your concern.
Amyloidosis is a condition where abnormal proteins, known as amyloids, accumulate in tissues and organs.
Primary amyloidosis: It is not typically hereditary.
Secondary amyloidosis: It is caused by chronic inflammatory diseases and is not hereditary.
Hereditary amyloidosis: It is a condition in which abnormal protein deposits (called amyloid) form in almost every tissue in the body. Fifty percent chance of passing the mutation to offspring.
I suggest the following:
For your husband : Confirm whether your mother-in-law's amyloidosis is hereditary. If hereditary amyloidosis is suspected, genetic testing can identify if your husband carries the mutation. A genetic counselor can provide advice.
For your children: If your husband carries a hereditary mutation, your children may also be at risk. Early screening and regular monitoring can help in early detection and management.
I also suggest your husband and children follow the following lifestyle changes:
Encourage a healthy diet.
Regular exercise.
Avoid smoking.
Go for periodic check-ups.
I hope this helps.
Thank you, and take care.
Regards.
