What is the treatment for fever and loose motions in a 15-months-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My daughter is 15 months old. She has a fever today, gave her Meftal P and she also had loose motion three times, so I gave Diof-DS. Please suggest if I should give her any other medicine.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As per the limited information information, your daughter seems to be having a viral infection. Taxim O (Cefixime) is an antibiotic and Diof-DS (Ofloxacin and Metronidazole) also contains two antibiotics. In all, there are a total of three antibiotics you are giving. For such infection, there is no need for any antibiotic at present. If your daughter is otherwise active, passing urine well, not vomiting, and accepting orally, then I suggest you give these medications:

  1. Take a syrup of Paracetamol when there is a fever. You can repeat it every four if needed.
  2. Take a syrup of Meftal P (Mefenamic acid) if the fever does not subside after one hour of Paracetamol or recur within four hours of the Paracetamol dose. You can repeat it every eight hours if needed.
  3. Drink ORS (oral rehydration solution) 100 to 150 ml after every loose motion. If she does not take it all at a time, then give a small amount frequently.
  4. Keep a watch on urine output.
  5. Get a stool test done for ova and cysts.
  6. Get a stool test done for rotavirus.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
