Can a carotid-cavernous fistula be treated with surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother has a carotid-cavernous fistula.

1. Can we cure this condition through surgery?

2. What are the risks of the surgery?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Generally, carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) is two types: direct carotid-cavernous fistula and dural carotid-cavernous fistula. Direct carotid-cavernous fistula requires intervention as complications are more common and severe. Mainly surgical or endovascular repair is done. Dural carotid-cavernous fistula requires intervention if there are significant symptoms.

Please follow up with your mother's reports, some photos of her eyes, and all the symptoms she has.

Thank you.
