Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had folliculitis because I suffered from staphylococcus aureus. First I had red itchy spots on my leg then it became worse with some pus on them and now I have a big red spot with some inflammation and and it hurts. I am currently using Bactroban. What should I do? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

With your descriptions and given pictures (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), it seems you have boils (also called furuncles or folliculitis). These are a deep bacterial infection of hair follicles. It is caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

General measures-

  1. If you are overweight, try to reduce your weight; Do regular exercise.
  2. Follow a balanced healthy diet with meat, plenty of fruit, and vegetables.
  3. Avoid smoking.
  4. Wash your whole body once a day with soap or cleanser and water. Wash your hands several times daily or use antiseptic hand rubs.
  5. Do not share your towel with other family members.
  6. Maintain a clean handkerchief and do not pick your nose.
  7. Change your underclothes and night attire regularly.
  8. Try to avoid activities that cause sweating and friction from clothing, such as squash and jogging.
  9. If you are iron deficient, a course of iron tablets may help reduce infection.
  10. Get your blood sugar done.

I suggest you take oral antibiotics like tablet Augmentin (Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid) 625 mg (if you are not allergic to penicillin group) thrice daily for five days and topical Mupirocin ointment twice daily for five days.

Review if your problem persists. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
