I get my period frequently. Could this be a health problem?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 23-year-old female. I get my second period after seven days of my last period, and it lasts four days, bleeding with brown-colored blood.

  1. What is the cause of this situation?

  2. Is this any health issue?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query, and I understand this situation can feel worrying, but you are not alone; many women experience unexpected or irregular bleeding at some point.

Having a second period just seven days after your last one, especially with brown-colored blood that lasts for several days, usually points to irregular uterine bleeding rather than a true second menstrual cycle. Brown blood often means old blood that is taking longer to leave the uterus.

Common causes include hormonal imbalance, stress, sudden weight changes, thyroid issues, or side effects from birth control pills or other medications. Sometimes, conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids, or infection can also cause mid-cycle or frequent bleeding.

Because you are young and otherwise healthy, this episode might be temporary, especially if it is the first time it has happened. If it keeps recurring, then see a gynecologist for a simple evaluation. They may suggest a pelvic ultrasound, thyroid and hormone tests, or a pregnancy test if relevant.

In the meantime, track your cycles, note any pain, discharge, or dizziness, and try to rest well and eat a balanced diet. Most of the time, once the underlying cause is identified and treated, your cycle returns to normal.

Please do not worry too much; this is usually manageable with timely medical care.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
