I have frequent urination. What exercises can help me?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

This is getting embarrassing to talk about. I feel like I have to pee almost every hour. Sometimes I do not even make it to the bathroom in time. Nights are the worst. I am up four to five times most nights.

My urine tests have been clear, so there is no infection. I have tried cutting out caffeine, but it has not made much of a difference.

A friend mentioned medications like Mirabegron, and I was wondering if those actually help. I am also postmenopausal. Could hormones be playing a role? Are there any exercises or habits that might help me regain better control?

I am getting really tired of planning my day around bathrooms, and I would appreciate your suggestions on what options might help me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand these symptoms can be difficult to talk about. My goal is to help you feel comfortable. Based on your test results, your symptoms strongly suggest overactive bladder (OAB). This condition is quite common and manageable with the right treatment.

A few tests you can get are:

  1. Urine microscopy and culture (rule out infection).
  2. Blood sugar testing (exclude diabetes).
  3. Other tests for additional assessment involve:
  4. Post-void residual urine (PVR) via bladder scan.
  5. Bladder diary (frequency-volume chart over three days).
  6. Overactive bladder secondary to postmenopausal estrogen deficiency (urge-predominant type).

Lifestyle modifications that can help you manage your frequent urination are:

  1. Timed voiding every two to three hours, restrict evening fluids, avoid caffeine or alcohol, and manage constipation.
  2. Pelvic floor muscle training (Kegel exercises) improves control, urgency, and leakage.
  3. Bladder retraining gradually lengthens intervals between voids.
  4. Weight reduction.

Some preventive measures you can follow are:

  1. Regular pelvic floor exercise regimen.
  2. Maintain optimal BMI (body mass index) and hydration.
  3. Manage comorbidities such as diabetes and constipation.
  4. Periodic review of medications that aggravate urgency (diuretics, caffeine intake).
  5. Local estrogen maintenance therapy can be indicated.

Follow up with me on the test reports.

I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you.
