Why do I have milk discharge 11 years after abortion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had an abortion about 11 years ago, and took medications as prescribed. Still, later, whenever I squeeze my breast, I notice breast milk coming out furiously, and I am scared because it is affecting my relationship with fertility.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

It sounds like you may be experiencing a condition called galactorrhea (discharge of breast milk unrelated to pregnancy or breastfeeding). This can occur due to an imbalance in hormones, particularly prolactin, which is the hormone responsible for milk production.

Although your abortion occurred many years ago, persistent or recurrent breast milk discharge may indicate that your prolactin levels remain elevated. Common causes include:

  • Hormonal imbalances, such as thyroid disorders.

  • Certain medications, including those used for depression or high blood pressure, are involved.

  • Less commonly, a small benign tumor in the pituitary gland (prolactinoma).

This condition can sometimes interfere with ovulation and make it more difficult to conceive, so it is important to have it properly evaluated.

I recommend visiting a doctor or endocrinologist for blood tests to check prolactin and thyroid hormone levels. Depending on the cause, treatment may include medications such as Cabergoline or Bromocriptine, which help lower prolactin levels and restore normal menstrual and fertility functions.

Avoid frequent breast stimulation or checking for discharge, as this can worsen the problem. With proper diagnosis and treatment, the discharge usually stops, and fertility often returns to normal.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
