How is the Average Length of a Menstrual Period Cycle calculated?

Average Length of a Menstrual Period Cycle is calculated by entering the date of the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP). This is done after a close observation of your menstrual periods. The LMP of every month is counted and thus you arrive at the average length of a menstrual period cycle.

How is the length of a Luteal Phase calculated?

The luteal phase is the final phase of the menstrual cycle following ovulation. Therefore, the length of the luteal phase is critical for an early pregnancy. Miscarriages are likely to occur if it is below the expected range.

In other words, the luteal phase is simply the phase of the menstrual cycle between ovulation and menstruation. Hence, some call this as Days Post Ovulation(DPO). Apparently, the luteal phase length (LPL) is the number of days from the day after ovulation to the day before your menstrual period. The normal range lasts anywhere between 10 to 18 days with an average period of 14 days. Women having a luteal phase length of less than 10 days strive hard to become pregnant. A luteal phase defect (LPD), also known as short luteal phase, is often associated with infertility and miscarriages.

The length of the DPO is normally consistent from one cycle to another. This varies from woman to woman; however, it remains constant for each woman from cycle to cycle. The follicular phase is different from this phase as it can vary from cycle to cycle. However, it should be known that the time of ovulation is determined by the follicular phase. This can be affected by physical or medical illness.
