What are the treatments for the dorsal wrist ganglion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son has a bump on his wrist, and we did an MRI of the left wrist. I need advice on what procedure or treatment is needed for this.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. This appears to be a dorsal wrist ganglion, which is a common and usually harmless condition. In most cases, it is more of a cosmetic issue and causes very few symptoms.

If the bump begins to cause pain, it can be managed with splints and pain relief medication. Should it become more bothersome or increase in size, treatment options include aspiration of the jelly-like material inside, followed by the use of a compression bandage. If necessary, surgical removal of the bump can be considered.

However, surgery comes with two potential downsides. First, it will replace the bump with a scar. Second, there is no guarantee that the ganglion will not return after surgery, which could leave both a bump and a scar.

I hope this helps.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Take care.

Thank you.
