Does gastric bypass surgery cause heart problems?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am five months post-gastric bypass and experiencing unusual cardiac symptoms, including heart palpitations, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. I was recently hospitalized for tachycardia (heart rate of 150 beats per minute) but was discharged with a diagnosis of dehydration. Despite taking all necessary supplements, including potassium and magnesium, these symptoms persist.

Could rapid weight loss be affecting my heart function? What types of cardiac monitoring should I request? How common are these symptoms after bariatric surgery? I need guidance on distinguishing normal post-surgical changes from potentially serious cardiac concerns.

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern about premature ejaculation.

Following gastric bypass surgery, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and nutrient deficiencies are common and can contribute to the symptoms you described.

While dehydration post-surgery can induce tachycardia (rapid heart rate), palpitations, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, further investigation is necessary beyond solely attributing them to dehydration.

I recommend an electrocardiogram (ECG) and an echocardiogram. The ECG will assess for rhythm disturbances and signs of ischemia. The echocardiogram will evaluate for pericardial effusion, heart function, valve morphology, and potential signs of ischemia.

Depending on the results, a stress test may be indicated. I advise consulting a cardiologist after the ECG and echocardiogram for further evaluation and reassurance. You can also connect with us for a comprehensive assessment and management of your health concerns.

Rapid weight loss can indeed cause some of the symptoms you mentioned. However, significant cardiac issues are generally not directly related to gastric bypass surgery or rapid weight loss.

Specifically, the following symptoms warrant thorough investigation and a cardiology referral: chest pain associated with heaviness, chest pain radiating to the left shoulder, neck, or arm, profuse sweating, severe shortness of breath (especially when lying down), and body or leg swelling. If any of these symptoms are present, a cardiac workup is essential to rule out cardiac involvement and provide appropriate treatment if needed.

I hope this information is helpful.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions. I am here to assist you.

Thank you.
