Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My partner is 35 years old. He got sick yesterday after going to his mother’s house. He had bouts of vomiting and diarrhea. The nearby doctor came and diagnosed him with gastroenteritis. Now, after taking the prescribed medications, he looks fine. So, I want to know what preventive measures and strategies would help us avoid having gastroenteritis.
Please tell us this, as we are unaware of it.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Preventing gastroenteritis involves a combination of hygiene practices, food safety measures, and awareness of transmission risks. I would suggest you do the following:
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Ensure all fruits and vegetables are washed thoroughly before consumption.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separate from ready-to-eat foods.
Cook foods to the proper temperature to kill harmful bacteria.
Refrigerate perishable foods promptly.
Ensure that drinking water is safe.
Be cautious with street food, as it may not always be prepared under hygienic conditions.
Avoid consuming raw or undercooked meats, seafood, and eggs.
Wash your hands after handling pets.
Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched, such as doorknobs, light switches, and countertops.
Ensure proper disposal of waste.
For young children, the rotavirus vaccine can prevent rotavirus, a common cause of gastroenteritis in infants and young children.
When traveling, especially to areas with known outbreaks or lower sanitation standards, be extra vigilant about food and water safety.
I hope this helps.
Thank you and take care.
Regards.
