How to manage acid reflux and its complications?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 45-year-old male, doing a stressful job. In the last two years, I have gained 18 pounds weight. Ever since I have had this constant sour or bitter taste in my mouth, and it feels like food or acid comes back up after I eat. Drinking coffee or orange juice makes it much worse. Also, I feel like my teeth have become sensitive for the last three months. I can not eat cold, sweet, and sour food. There is also a peculiar feeling of loss of teeth material. What can be the cause of such complications? Are these two factors related? What can I do to take care of my teeth?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
The symptoms you mentioned correlate to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is caused by the regurgitation of stomach acids back into the esophagus.
The probable causes include:
-
Hydrochloric acid (HCl).
-
H.pylori.
-
Gastric ulcer.
I suggest you do the following investigations. These include:
-
Upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy.
-
Biopsy for H.pylori infection.
-
Stool for occult blood.
-
Complete blood count (CBC).
I advise you to do the following things. These include:
-
Syrup Sucral O (Sucralfate, Oxetacaine)10 ml to be taken 30 to 45 minutes before lunch and dinner for seven days.
-
Capsule Sompraz D (Domperidone, Esomeprazole) (prokinetic and proton pump inhibitor) is to be taken before breakfast for 10 days.
-
Syrup Overzyme (digestive supplement) 10 ml to be taken thrice daily, 15-20 minutes after a meal for five days.
-
Tablet Zyncovit (multivitamins and minerals) is to be taken once daily for 15 days.
Follow-up can be done with your reports.
I suggest you do the following. These include:
-
Avoid spicy foods, oily food, and carbonated and caffeine drinks,
-
Try taking up fewer carbs and adding high protein and fiber to your diet.
-
Stress management is very crucial.
-
Avoid citrus fruits.
Having protein and fiber-rich food will help to reduce symptoms. For the time being, antacids will be of good use. Within a week or two, you will become normal, and your teeth will feel better.
Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
