Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been experiencing discomfort in my throat and esophagus for the past few weeks. While food and water can pass down, I consistently have trouble swallowing and abdominal pain on a few occasions. I am currently taking Rabaprazole for my condition. My doctor recommended a gastroscopy procedure. Does this procedure hurt, and what are the potential side effects? Will it help alleviate the sensation of an object stuck in my throat and esophagus? Please help.
Thank you in advance.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
In your case, a gastroscopy or upper gastrointestinal endoscopy should be performed. It is done with local anesthesia to ensure you do not experience pain and remain comfortable during the procedure. However, this does not necessarily mean you will not feel anything at all, but since it is a necessary procedure, it is advisable to proceed with it. The side effects are generally minimal and short-lived. After the procedure, you may experience some nausea and throat soreness, but these symptoms will subside.
This procedure aims to examine your throat, esophagus, and stomach to determine the cause of your symptoms. While it may not immediately alleviate the sensation of something being stuck, it will provide insights into why you are experiencing this discomfort and allow an appropriate treatment. Something lodged in your throat, like a foreign body or polyp (abnormal growth or lump), can also be removed during the procedure.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions.
Thank you.
