Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 28-year-old man, and my GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) symptoms, like heartburn and regurgitation, tend to flare up when I consume carbonated beverages or spicy foods. Recently, I have also been experiencing mild chest pain that feels different from heartburn and occurs sporadically. It sometimes makes me anxious about whether it could be heart-related. Could this be a GERD-related esophageal spasm, or do I need to explore cardiac issues too? What diagnostic tests, such as an endoscopy or ECG, would help clarify the cause of my symptoms?
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
It seems like your experiences are related to GERD but it is always good to be prepared. It is better to be safe than sorry. It is essential to rule out cardiac issues.
You can do the following tests to confirm, for heart
ECG (electrocardiogram).
Stress test or echocardiogram.
For GERD
Endoscopy.
Esophageal manometry.
24-Hour pH monitoring.
You also need to change your lifestyle:
Avoid triggering foods like carbonated drinks, spicy foods, and large meals.
Avoid lying down after eating.
Elevate your head while sleeping.
Take proton pump inhibitors, such as Omeprazole, Esomeprazole, Pantoprazole, Lansoprazole, etc.
If the chest pain worsens and it feels pressure-like, radiates to your arm/jaw, or is accompanied by shortness of breath, seek emergency care immediately. It could be a sign of a heart attack.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
