Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Can Ginseng be taken along with antiseizure medicine like Valparin? I have been asked by my fitness trainer to take Ginseng to increase stamina and immunity. Please suggest me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com. Ginseng is a medicinal plant known for its energy-boosting properties. There are different types of ginseng, such as Asian, American, and Siberian. To provide accurate advice, I need to know which type you are using and for what purpose. It is important to note that ginseng should not be taken for more than three months. If you are only taking Valproate (valproic acid) and no other medications, it is generally safe. However, caution is advised when combining Siberian ginseng with Valproate, as it may enhance the sedative effect of Valproate. There are no other proven effects or interactions. If you wish to use ginseng, try taking it together with Valproate during a vacation period when you are at home, and observe for any sedative effects. If the combination causes increased sedation, it would be advisable to discontinue the use of ginseng.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

It is Korean Ginseng and till now I have not started using it. I will be using it as advised by the gym trainer. Why usage of more than three months restricted? Please explain me.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

  • Well Asian or Korean Ginseng is used for diabetes, unclear thinking and erectile dysfunction in males.
  • FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has not reviewed this product for effectiveness or side effects. Hence, all we know is based on literature and public reviews.
  • Though it is known for its energy boosting, antioxidant and increasing testosterone in males it is associated with the side effects that include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, palpitations and trouble sleeping.
  • Long-term use may lead to insomnia or sleeplessness and also may affect blood pressure.
  • Well, for what reason he prescribed you Ginseng?
